Sunday 31 August 2014 – Castle Cary weekend loop day 2

Sunday – Bath / Bristol to Castle Cary

Day 2 saw Maccy and Lindsay set off at 0715 from Bath to rendezvous with Tom and Pete at the end of cycle route 4 into Bristol. We then all headed out along route 3 heading to Wells. The route out of Bristol ( Whichurch way) was a challenge given the roads were all being dug up, and the entrance to the trail somewhat concealed. Some pretty hilly conditions were met before we got to Chew Magna Lake. Here Lindsay received a dressing down from a Water board monitor who found him on the wrong side of the fence ( lakeside) ; there were no signs saying no entry, but hey ho, the monitor is to be obeyed.

From the South of the Lake, we followed the cycle path until the road signs contradicted the OS map definition of what was the cycle trail. we decided to trust the map. What followed was a very tough climb up onto the top of the mendip hills, an unrelenting 200M climb, ( we think the route had been re- signposted to avoid this steep climb) . Views from the top were fab. We stopped at Priddy for a snack on the village green which seemed to double as a sheep market on occasion. Snack over , it was a very exhilarating drop down into Wells, the road being if anything steeper than we had climbed on the other side. Lunch was taken in Wells Cathedral grounds, we then set off from Wells following what turned out to be quite a tough ( ups and downs) through Wootton, Pilton, Pylle, Ditcheat and at last Castle Cary . 45 miles for Tom and Pete, 61 miles for Lindsay and Pete.

A great 2 days with 125 miles being covered, no punctures , no bike incidents, just excellent Wiltshire / Somerset countryside and a rolling route with only a couple of challenging hills thrown in for good measure.
