Cycle Wiltshire
These pages are here to describe Lindsay’s discovery rides around Wiltshire and beyond
Sunday 29th December 2013 – Bath to Chipping Sodbury Circuit
Joined Bath CC for a club run, starting a rather late 9 a.m. start from Midland Bridge, with ten fellow cyclists. All road bikes, many layers to guard against the frosty morning. The usual “three group” system was abandoned due to weather and lowish numbers.
Decent pace for 30 miles to Chipping Sodbury – no idea of the route, (pedal and keep up Lindsay!) Nice cafe, drinking chocolate and muffin, then 15 miles back into Bath. 45 miles total, 50 including the journey to start and back. Just about kept pace, put of condition slightly as first road ride for many months….. Worth returning with nice people, despite the late start, and need some fitness conditioning. No piccies sadly this time.
Sunday 2nd June 2013 – Staverton to Devizes Circuit
Early start in glorious sunshine but chilly air. B3106 and B3107 (both deserted) through Holt and onto Melksham. Follow way-marked NCR 403 north-west towards and then ascent of Bowden Hill to Spye Park and Sandy Lane. Over the A342 and A3102 to Heddington and onto Hill Cott (OS Landranger Sheet 173 Ref 010655).
Off road for two miles southwards along the passable Wessex Ridgeway onto lane to Roundway then northern edge of Devizes. Coffee at petrol station then a good spot to pick up the converted tow path (now NCR route 4) west along the Kennet & Avon Canal. Plain sailing, delightful cycling and canal scenery for 12 miles following the canal westerly back to Staverton.
34 miles total in 3 hours. Great circular route.
