Brittany – 2012
Pete T, Lindsay and Tom spent five days cycling in Finistere, Brittany, following a route provided by Brittany Ferries.
Day 1 -Thursday 16th August
Afternoon departure in Scenic from Dorchester for Plymouth port. Hassle with pay and display; shelter from rain in coffee lounge before 8:30 overnight sailing. Comfortable cabin and good ferry food.
Day 2 – Friday 17th August
Disembarked at 8:00 am, and straight onto waymarked cycle route. Stops at St Pol de Leon and Morlaix before off-road route following course off disused railwayline. Late lunch at Berrien before final roll into Huelgoat. After locating very pleasant bed and breakfast accommodation for night, a walk around the lake and beers. Meal at guest house. 43 miles cycling.
Day 3 – Saturday 18th August
Left Huelgoat at 10:00 am to re-join waymarked cycle track towards Pont-Aven. Stops at Carhaix-Plouguer, Gourin for lunch and Scaer for coffee before scramble to locate guest house at Pont-Aven. Another very pleasant guest house and evening meal at on river terrace of restaurant. 58 miles cycling.
Day 4 – Sunday 19th August
Lanes from Huelgoat to Concarneau, which was sealed off for blues event. Roads to La Foret-Fouesnant for lunch stop of bread, cheese and tomatoes. Many map checks to pick out route through town of Quimper, capital of Finistere, and to successfully pick up cycle route towards Douarnenez. Sea swim, film festival and meal at sea-front restaurant; accommodation in very pleasant hotel. 50 miles cycling.
Day 5 – Monday 20th August
Coastal lanes with inclines to start the day around the Baie de Douarnenez, lunch at the near-deserted village of Argol. Across the magnificent Pont de Terenez and descent into Le Faou. Coffee stop at Hopital-Camfrout, followed by north-easterly crossing into des enclos et des monts d’aree. We saw or visited about eight of the magnificent 36 churches of the region. Located motel accommodation at Lampual-Guimiliau for final night in Brittany. Good meal at motel. 60 miles cycling.
Day 6 – Tuesday 21st August
Continuation of tour through des enclos et des monts d’aree with stop at Guimiliau, then on through St-Thegonnec, Penze (a re-visit) Taule, and lunch stop on the quay at Carantec. Final route around the Baie de Morlaix, through St-Pol-de-Leon and onto port of Roscoff. Timely sailingat 6:30 pm and so back to Plymouth for 11:00 pm and Dorchester for 1:30 am. 26 miles cycling.
